The picture (Street Shorts)

IMG_1787He asked if he could take the picture. My mother said no but he took it anyway. He said he’d cut out our faces. She barely understood him but knew he was stealing us, stripping us, having his way with us, and there was nothing she could do to stop it. He took her last shred of dignity with that forced picture, all the value in the world we had left. In that moment, begging outside a suburban strip mall, I knew I would one day get my revenge.
