To get to the old site of the Ashview Community Garden, I go through the Atlanta University Center (a collection of historically black colleges — Spelman, Morehouse, others) and then cross over to Fair Street. I pass a little market, which I photographed near the beginning of my three-year photo essay about this neighborhood changing due to the Atlanta Beltline. I shot it again yesterday, because it had been painted. I discovered why — this corner is one of the biggest gang recruitment spots in the City of Atlanta. But the neighbors are trying to take it back. The neighbors are trying.
